Get on the Trail of Australia’s Largest Garage Sale in 2019

Australia’s biggest community and sustainability event, Garage Sale Trail, is now just over a month away and registrations have been pouring in like never before, promising to be a gigantic weekend of waste-reducing, planet saving, treasure hunting fun.

Now in its ninth year, the multi award-winning national initiative seeks to educate Australians on the importance of reuse and the need to take individual responsibility for the impact of our consumption habits whilst building stronger, more connected and resilient communities.

With thousands of people around the country currently spring cleaning in preparation for garage sales already registered for the 19th and 20th October event, Garage Sale Trail 2019 is set to offer up a wealth of weird and wonderful sales, sellers and items for fans of pre-loved to discover around the country. This year’s Garage Sale Trail is set to be the biggest yet with 400,000 Aussies projected to take part as sellers and shoppers at over 18,000 garage sale events to be held across the country with upwards of three million kilos of stuff to be diverted from landfill.

From a self described “showgirl” selling her vintage wares to get to Hollywood, to a Queensland family offloading the contents of a “mystery room” they uncovered in their new home, and a Tiki loving blacksmith looking to rehome his extensive collection of Simpsons memorabilia … there are so many reasons why people list a Garage Sale Trail.

Here’s just a taste of what’s on across the country so far….

VIC

Showgirl Showdown – Outrageously glamorous showgirl Jessi Leigh is hell bent on getting to Hollywood. So she’s downsizing drastically, selling her prized show gowns, vintage, costumes, shoes and second hand designer fashion at her Frankston sale. Get there early and get your Dita Von Teese on!

Coveted Closets – Designer, Pre-Loved and Vintage – ethical fashion aficionado Claire Goldsworthy aka The Fashion Advocate is getting some of her friends together for a very fashionable group sale at Bayside Town Hall. As Yves Saint Laurent said “fashions fade, style is eternal” so set your sights on this pre-loved treasure trove!

QLD

Lost treasures of Timdoolan – When the owners of a Banana Shire property moved in over a year ago, they discovered a mystery room full of the lost treasures of previous inhabitants: vintage glassware, an ornamental porcelain egg (Faberge?) and more. Now their neighbours are in on it too and are bringing their own pre-loved gems along to add to the bounty on offer.

River Downs Next Biggest Garage Sale – Over 30 Helensvale households are working together to create this huge sale with thousands of bargains up for grabs including over 500 dance costumes from Showbiz Circus and Dance Studio! Jazz hands all round!

ACT

Woden CSC – This sale at the Canberra Southern Cross Club will feature items from the city’s iconic Golden Grille – the location of countless birthday parties and family celebrations – which was refurbished last year. Come along, grab a piece of Canberra’s history and breathe in the nostalgia (and Old Spice residue).

NSW

Straight outta the Smithy – This is what you get when a blacksmith with a penchant for The Simpsons decides to offload some “stuff”. This Blue Mountains artist will be selling a bunch of blacksmithing tools including a portable forge, leg vices and hammers. And just to spice it up there’ll also be Tiki art and a large Simpsons collection sale too. D’oh!

Ten Things I Hate About New – A bunch of childhood mates from Woollahra with a shared love of vintage and reuse are preparing to pass on their treasures. There’s gold here. Get in early!

TAS

Pandora’s Box – Lovers of tea and tunes will want to get along to this Glenorchy sale that features a vintage American organ that’s over 100 years old alongside other instruments and bric-a-brac.

The Joy Exchange – Convict City Roller Derby League are hosting Hobart’s biggest garage sale on October 19 with a multitude of stalls and items on offer. Get your skates on!
