HUUT Organic Bedding: Ethically-Made from Seeds to Bed Sheets

HUUT Organic Bedding: Ethically-Made from Seeds to Bed Sheets

Sleep is crucial to our mental health and physical well-being, improves our immunity, helps to regulate our weight and enables us to concentrate and function optimally. Because of this, we go to great lengths to create the right atmosphere for a good night’s sleep.

Along with removing the TV from the bedroom, keeping your smartphone in another room, practicing breathing exercises and reading a book, one effective but often overlooked aspect to creating a perfect sleep environment is high quality, sustainable bedding.

Cue, Huut certified fair trade organic bedsheets.

Chemical-Free Bedding

The secret to Huut’s super soft and comfortable bedding is the fine, long staple non-GMO cotton responsibly sourced from a certified organic farm in India. The cotton crop is rain-fed and is grown without synthetic fertilisers and pesticides. It is also GOTS-certified and OEKO-TEX-certified which means it has been farmed, harvested and processed without hazardous chemicals.

Certified organic and chemical-free sheets are a godsend for anyone who has sensitive skin and allergies. I’m talking from experience here. As someone who has extremely sensitive skin, breaking out in rashes and welts is common when my skin is exposed to synthetic fabrics and chemically treated materials. The problem normally surfaces when I’m travelling for work and have to stay at hotels and Airbnbs where the bedsheets have been commercially laundered. Just a few hours in a strange bed is enough to know whether my skin will have a reaction to the bedding material. If so, I start feeling itchy and throughout the night I’ll toss and turn trying to get comfortable (my partner Ben can attest to this, my nocturnal acrobatics sometimes wakes him up).

And that’s not even the half of it. In the event of a skin reaction, I’ll wake up to big welts on my back and thighs from a night of scratching trying to relieve myself from the constant itch.

So for me, sleeping on bed sheets manufactured without toxic chemicals isn’t just a nice to have, it’s a must have.

Coco doesn’t want to model, she just wants to sleep!

Fair Trade Certified

Now on its production side, Huut is also “hitting it out of the ballpark” so to speak. All its bedding products are Fair Trade Certified, so you can sleep assured that the business supports better working conditions for the farmers who grew the cotton. In fact, for each product sold, the organic cotton farmers earn a premium, increasing their earnings and empowering them financially.

But that’s not all. Huut’s factory is also FLO-certified and Fair-Trade certified, validating that it is a sweatshop-free workplace. Its whole supply chain has been independently audited to ensure that it is built on fair labour practices, that workers are treated with dignity and respect, and there is no child labour or forced labour. Seriously, how can anyone sleep at night knowing they contributed to human exploitation? I know I couldn’t.

As part of our partnership, I was given the opportunity to road test their organic bedding. I chose a Queen Size organic sateen bedding bundle in Steel Grey which contained one duvet cover, one flat sheet, one fitted sheet and two pillow covers. I received the box (recycled and recyclable, tick and tick) and opened it up to find minimal recyclable paper packaging (tick) and the sheets stored in a reusable, washable organic fabric bag (another tick).

I took the sheets out of the fabric bag and ran my fingers over the material. It was luxuriously soft and silky to the touch. Brilliant start; exactly what I expected they should feel like.

Bed sheets that meet my high ethical and ecological standards are a non-negotiable, so the true test of functionality is how well rested I am after sleeping in it.

I won’t give you a play-by-play account of a week sleeping in Huut organic bed sheets (because exclaiming each day how I’ve had the best sleep ever constitutes as bragging and I’m not full of myself like that haha!), suffice to say that this busy ecopreneur needed that week of total bedroom bliss and is grateful that Huut came into her life.

So if you’re having trouble sleeping, go grab yourself some Huut organic bedding. You can thank me later.
