There’s no question about it: if you want a good night’s sleep you have to invest in good quality, super soft and comfortable bedding. The one I’ve been recommending since 2017? SOL Organics luxurious fair-trade, organic cotton bed sheets.
This US-based organic bedding brand meets my personal ethical standards on many fronts; it has a transparent supply chain from seed to product, its India-based manufacturer only uses organic cotton fibres that are non-GMO, GOTS-certified and Oeko-Tex-certified which means it has been farmed, harvested and processed without toxic and hazardous chemicals.
SOL Organic’s factory is also FLO-certified and Fair-Trade certified which means that their whole supply chain has been externally audited to ensure that it is built on fair labour practices. Seriously, who could sleep at night knowing that their bedding contributed to human exploitation or spewed chemical pollution in rivers and waterways? Not me.
Anyway, here are three main reasons why I’m a big fan of SOL Organics (and not because I’m being paid to write this either!):
SOL Organics is GOTS-certified
I take my earth citizenship seriously (I launched Eco Warrior Princess in 2010, before it became “cool to care”) and that means supporting conscious businesses that do right by people and planet. There is nothing more off-putting than a business who only cares about their bottom line and disregards the welfare of workers and the natural environment.
But now the marketplace is increasingly complex as eco-consciousness has become trendy AF (if I hear ‘green is the new black’ one more time…!) and it seems every Tom, Dick, Harry and Jane Doe is jumping on the sustainability bandwagon. It’s almost becoming a full-time job sorting the greenwashing claims from the genuine ones!
Thankfully, there’s no greenwashing issues with SOL Organics. Their entire supply chain is Global Organic Textiles Standard (GOTS) certified which means that the brand complies with the world’s leading textile processing standard for organic fibres. The entire end-to-end process of their production – including how the cotton is grown, its pesticide use, water usage, and whether the workers were treated fairly – meets the highest global standards of organic and chemical-free production and has been independently verified to ensure that everything is above board ethically and environmentally.
GOTS-certification even covers what sort of dyes and product packaging are used in manufacturing (non-toxic and eco-friendly of course!) so that customers have peace of mind knowing that the brand meets high ecological and social standards.
They’re committed to no child labour.
“We’re working with proven partners in India that invest in the health and well-being of women and children, and we’re committed to eradicating child labor.” – SOL Organics website
According to the International Labour Office (ILO) there are roughly 152 million children aged 5 to 17 engaged in child labour; that’s almost one-in-ten children around the world, with most children in child labour working on family farms and in family enterprises. No child should have to be put to work (particularly as education is the key to economic empowerment) so the fact that SOL is committed to this cause means they get another big tick in my book.
Furthermore, the brand donates $7.50 from each purchase to one of four charities including non-profit child advocacy organization The Children’s Defense Fund and Hope For Justice, a global non-profit organization which aims to end human trafficking and modern-day slavery.
One of the most affordable organic bedding brands in the market
One of my pet peeves as a sustainably-minded shopper is how businesses take advantage of the conscious consumers’ willingness to pay higher prices for ethical and sustainable products by setting premium prices and pocketing the profits. SOL Organics doesn’t do this. Compare the prices of their Fair-Trade, certified organic sheets to others in the marketplace and their prices almost always come in lower every time.
For example, their organic bedding sets feature 1 x fitted sheet, 1 x flat sheet, 2 x pillow cases and you pay as little as $99. Small price to pay for a restful (and sustainable) night’s sleep in my humble opinion.
So how are they able to keep their prices reasonable for ethically-made organic bedding? Simply put; they aren’t friggin’ greedy! They don’t mark up beyond the initial premium, unlike the rest of the industry that does exactly that. Fair prices for fairly-made bedding. That’s why I’m down with SOL Organics.
Add the fact that they offer a 30-day risk-free trial and have free standard US shipping for purchases over $50 and it would be silly to purchase fairtrade, organic sheets elsewhere. And if you’ve got extra cash to splash, I recommend buying an organic bedding bundle set and save even more off the original price!
