What’s the secret to my extremely productive days of late? Wonderfully soft organic cotton bed sheets, 300 thread count fair trade duvet cover and luxurious pillow cases thanks to our new partnership with Sustained Organic Living (SOL) or SOL Organics.
Since recently changing over to SOL’s organic bed sheets, I have been gushing about its luxuriousness almost every night. My partner Ben has been gushing about the sheets too. This is odd for the both of us since we’ve been on our sustainability journey for quite a while and already own (and have spent many nights on) several sustainable bedding sets. But the superior quality of SOL’s bedding seems to blow all other sheets in our linen cupboard out of the water so to speak. Now that I’ve had the pleasure of sleeping in them, there’s no way that I’ll ever be able to sleep without them. It’s like getting a daily pampering session before falling asleep!
The added bonus is that the gorgeous organic sheets seems to transform my simple bedroom to a stylish boutique hotel room!
SOL’s queen size organic ‘Classic Bedding Bundle‘ in blue (fitted sheet, flat sheet, duvet cover, two pillow cases and two shams) is now a highly prized possession – and for a self-professed minimalist, that’s saying something.
The sheets are silky smooth to the touch and that’s due to its 300 thread count. The fabric is made of single ply yarn that is spun into a fine thread. To give it its super soft, smooth finish, a sateen weave is then employed. The fabric is also lightweight and breathable, so it provides the right level of comfort and warmth and makes it ideal for the ever-changing cool/humid/hot climate here at the farm.
The brand also has some serious eco credentials under its belt which will turn your bedding infatuation into a full blown bedding obsession.
Bed sheets that are cheap but definitely not nasty
I’m a night owl and these bed sheets are about the only thing that’s been enticing me to hop into bed earlier than my bed time (sorry Ben…!). It’s a strange feeling, the looking forward to going to bed feeling. I’m not accustomed to feeling like this unless I’m sick and completely worn out, so I suspect the super soft organic bed sheets have a lot to do with it. Anyway, aside from the way it makes my skin feel, here’s why I’m giving SOL bed sheets my tick of approval:
The business sources its Fair-Trade certified organic non-GMO cotton from Kisan Samiti Farms in Central India. The crop is rain-fed and applied only with natural fertilizers and pesticides. The farmers earn a much fairer price for their cotton which helps to fight poverty in their communities. In addition, I co-own a certified organic farm and understand the approach to sustainable farming. It is much more holistic and a healthier way to farm – for people, animals and the planet.
The GOTS-certified organic cotton sheets, duvets and pillow cases are all manufactured in a FLOCERT factory which is independently audited, complies with Fair-Trade standards and is certified as such. Low-impact dyes are also used in manufacture, which is less toxic and also helps to conserve water. Production is sweatshop-free, exploitation-free, child-labor free and workers are paid fairly and treated with dignity and respect.
3. Reusable and recyclable packaging
The sheets are tastefully packaged in a reusable tote bag made from the same certified organic cotton bedding fabric affixed with natural coconut buttons. The tags and labeling are Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified and can be recycled and is also 100% biodegradable.
Affordability is the tipping point. It promotes access, which in turn creates demand and conversion to organic cotton. It creates a symbiosis in which everyone wins: the farmer, the consumer and the earth.” – Sachin Chahaun, Co-Founder of Sustainable Organic Living
You would think that the brand’s superior quality and commitment to ethical production and sustainability would mean its prices would be astronomical. But in fact, compared with other premium brands (certified organic and not) SOL is much cheaper and that’s because the brand doesn’t add extra markups. For a premium organic cotton sheet set, the price starts from just $99 USD. The brand also offers free ground shipping across the US which saves you even more money if you’re based there (the brand does ship internationally for a fee).
5. Gives back
SOL exhibits social-consciousness as well as eco-consciousness. The business partners with four charities: Children’s Defense Fund, Water4, Hope For Justice and The Fund for Animals; and donates $7.50 from every sale of bedsheets to the charity of your choosing. Broad choices for charities too so you’re not stuck donating to a cause you’re not really interested in!
