Good news for all Star Wars fans! Ethical shoe brand Po-Zu, in collaboration with Lucasfilm, has launched their new line of Star Wars inspired footwear.
And of course, the whole collection is made from entirely sustainable materials – sustainable cotton, coconut fibre, vegetarian tweed, etc.
Upping the cool factor is the fact that their collection includes official replicas of the footwear worn by the main characters in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. You now wear the shoes of Rey, Finn, Poe and Chewie. Or choose the shoes inspired by BB-8, the Stormtroopers and the Resistance. Indeed, there is a pair of shoes made for every Star Wars fan and for every member of the family. The collection is available for men, women and children.
Sven Segal, founder and CEO of Po-Zu describes the Star Wars footwear as “a collectible but also highly wearable.” According to him, “We wanted the shoes to resonate with the Star Wars community whilst also being commercially designed by incorporating some strong trend-led cues.”
What makes the collection great is that it brings to the table Po-Zu’s advocacy for sustainability and ethical fashion. As Kate Osborne, Po-Zu’s PR and marketing officer said, “We are excited about the collaboration because it helps us bring the craftsmanship [of Po-Zu shoes] and [the issue of] sustainability into the Star Wars community.”
This observation is shared by Safia Minney, the managing director of Po-Zu who noted that “this is a great opportunity to mainstream sustainable footwear, ethical business practice and make Po-Zu the go-to ethical footwear brand.”
Aside from the Star Wars collection, Po-Zu has also given a sneak peak of its Mainline collection, featuring espadrilles made from chrome-free and vegetable tanned leather; wedges and sandals made of Piñatex™ or leather from pineapple leaves with eco microfibre lining and cork and natural latex footbed; as well as sneakers or trainers made of organic cotton canvas with eco microfibre lining and coconut husk foot mattress.
Fighting the dark side of shoe fashion
Established in 2006, Po-Zu started from a back room of a small house in Islington, London. Its shoes were made in Glastonbury, at one of the remaining shoe factories in the United Kingdom.
The company has established Better Shoes Foundation in 2016 to promote sustainable practices in the footwear industry. Sustainable Brands reported that used shoes are oftentimes chucked to landfills, with less than 5 percent recycled. What’s more, shoes are tanned with chromium, one of the leading causes of pollution.
As part of its commitment to ethical manufacturing processes, Po-Zu is working with an eco-friendly factory in Portugal. It is in this small factory that Po-Zu shoes are crafted and handmade beautifully as can be seen in the video below.
Po-Zu is currently ranked as the top Ethical Shoe Brand in the UK by the Ethical Company Association. It has also received the ‘Fashion Worked’ Best Ethical Label Award from the Ethical Fashion Forum. It has cemented itself as firmly against modern slavery, fighting against questionable supply chain labor practices.
