A Wardrobe Clearance Sale – The Green Fashion Event of the Season

Event stylist: Wendy Grace

Many of you would have read my post earlier in the year where I made a new years resolution to buy nothing new for my wardrobe. I wanted to put my green principles to the test to see whether I could put my money where my mouth is. If you want to read up on the story behind it, please click here.

A quarter of the year has passed and I can honestly say that I haven’t cracked, or have been tempted to crack… yet.

The pros of buying nothing new: I am actively contributing to sustainability. I have inspired other people. I have more free time for things I care about such as my blogging and intern work for Eco Brides Magazine.

The cons: Buying nothing new for my wardrobe means I have to rely on what I find in vintage and second-hand shops or on eBay. But as I stand at 5’2, wear size 6 with a shoe size of 5, it means I often don’t find much at all.

Yesterday, however, my girl friend and fellow blogger Wendy Grace of Little J Girl held her first ever green fashion event. Even I hadn’t been game enough to organise one of these yet! This green fashion event is otherwise known as a wardrobe clearance sale. And let me tell you Wendy had a wardrobe clearance sale to end all wardrobe clearance sales. I don’t think I’m game to hold one after the extravaganza this woman pulled off!

For starters, Wendy doesn’t do things in halves and so the event location and the styling was what you would expect of a fashionista and budding stylist. No detail was forgotten from the striped drinking straws, delicious canapes, mini-cupcakes and champagne, blooms in square vases, scented candles, recycled paper shopping bags and clothing racks.

Wendy also stands at less than 5 foot and wears a size 5 shoe so I knew I would have no problem finding items that would fit. I was also certain I was going to have a ball going through her stuff before I even got there! So when after 7 hours I was still trying things on at close time, I wasn’t just having a ball, I was in eco-fashion heaven! I picked up so many beautiful second-hand items so cheaply including a fantastic vintage leather bag, a woollen cropped jacket and a linen dress that I almost feel like I had robbed my own friend!

The good news is that my eco-fashion equilibrium has now been restored and in the coming week this Eco Warrior Princess will be posting her very first second-hand outfit post! Yay!

Stay tuned guys :)

What I didn’t mention in my earlier piece is that Ben also writes and produces his own music and recently has a new album coming out soon funded by a crowd funding program. The album is called ‘free as a bird’ and you can find more about it and even help him out here. Frankly any one who shares my green philosophy has my support!

And just to add to his already hectic schedule, Ben is also looking to move beyond eco-friendly jewellery and develop a sustainable fashion clothing range with a greater focus on men’s fashion. Go Ben!

Indigo Bazaar Makes Ethical and Eco Fashion More Accessible to Australians

Carlie Ballard is not your average fun loving, globe trotting fashionista.

She is also the founder of ethical and sustainable fashion business Indigo Bazaar, an etailer that sells stylish, contemporary and avant garde ethical and sustainable fashion pieces. Carlie hasn’t always played this role. Once upon a time she worked for an adventure travel company which saw her travelling to far flung corners of the globe. This job enabled her to learn about the world, learning about its vast cultures, enjoying its food, receiving the kindness of its people and witnessing its beauty.

However, it was one particular trip to the Nepalese Himalayas that planted the seed of this business idea. Carlie was no longer content to enjoy these countries, take some photos and move on to the next adventure. The Nepalese people were so very welcoming and warm hearted that she wanted to empower these people to create sustainable livelihoods for themselves, their families and their communities. And it was this thought that gave birth to Indigo Bazaar.

“Starting a business is a challenge in itself,” Carlie says. “But I think the biggest challenge I am facing at the moment and I think ethical fashion in Australia is facing is the availability of ethical fashion! You won’t find any of the brands stocked at Indigo Bazaar at a Westfield, so the challenge is about getting people comfortable with purchasing online, being strategic in their purchases so they don’t have to do a mad dash to the mall on a Friday afternoon and sacrifice their ethical fashion beliefs because they need an instant outfit.”

It was like Carlie was telling me the story of my own ethical shopping frustrations! But despite this, Carlie remains optimistic about the future of eco and ethical fashion. “The industry is without a doubt more advanced in the northern hemisphere. Many of the brands we stock are from the UK, America and Europe. The Ethical Fashion Forum is based in London and Indigo Bazaar is actually a member. They have dedicated fashion trade shows such as Estethica, the Green Shows and also Pure London and have a large amount of ethical labels. People here in Australia are starting to catch on with numbers for the awareness of Fair Trade increasing in 2011 by 35% on 2010 figures. So it’s happening, but these figures are predominantly focused on food. So the challenge is to filter this through to fashion.” You can see Indigo Bazaar’s recent interview with The Ethical Fashion Forum here.

In spite of the overwhelming odds, Carlie is going full steam ahead to realising her ethical and eco fashion dreams. She along with a group of like-minded business individuals are currently in talks to hold future events in Sydney to showcase ethical and sustainable fashion. “It’s no longer about wearing hippy square pants. Fashion is turning a corner and knowing the story of your garment is something that people are wanting to know more about now.”

Personally, I love that Indigo Bazaar stocks some eco fashion forward labels including Choolips, Nearfar, Lalesso, and Kissin Cussin. And they don’t just stop at garments. You can purchase beautiful bags, purses, scarves and perfume too!

So don’t be shy, head to the Indigo Bazaar website and browse through their fabulous range. And don’t be afraid to email them if you have an enquiry about size and fit. They understand that some of their labels are relatively unknown in Australia and are more than happy to help you out!

Indigo Bazaar is also offering a discount for Eco Warrior Princess readers. Just use the code: ecowarriorfriends to receive $10 off your next purchase over $50 at Indigobazaar.com.au.

Thanks a bunch Carlie xx

Eco Blog Overhaul

Happy Easter everyone!

I hope you are all having a wonderful time with your family and recovering well from the chocolate and hot cross bun binge eating.

I thought for today’s blog post I’d deviate away from the standard sustainability talk to share with you some news about this blog that you may find rather exciting.

After almost 3 years, I have finally decided to move this website forward and give it a blog overhaul. Getting a kick up the bum from my fiancé Ben was what I needed to set this in motion. I have now secured the help of one of my best high school mates who is a gifted graphic designer, to design my logo. And it’s only going to cost me a dinner and a few drinks! Thanks in advance Johnny boy!

In addition, I have also decided to add a fortnightly outfit post to give you an idea of how I put together my vintage and second-hand finds and inspire you towards sustainable and ethical fashion. You may also find me collaborating a lot more with other bloggers on style shoots. The life of a blogger can be a rather lonely one so being able to collaborate with other bloggers makes life a lot more fun and allows me to bounce off creative ideas to someone who understands this online world. Just try not to laugh too hard when you see my ‘modelling’ pics!

So over the next 6 months this blog will be revamped and relaunched and you should see some positive changes. Rest assured that I will continue to write the blog content on a consistent basis, if you promise me you’ll keep reading it!

Love

Jen xx

Eco Gadgets that Help Lower the Bills

High energy consumption has been and continues to be a major concern of many wives and mothers for a long time now. Fortunately, a wealth of information providing tips and strategies are readily available on the internet today empowering women in managing their homes in the most efficient way possible.

The practical steps homeowners can take to ensure an energy efficient home are numerous. But apart from simply taking action, there are also eco gadgets that people can use. Many are space savers being small in size and are quite affordable. Below are some of them that can help you at home.

Electricity or energy monitor – This is perhaps one of the most important you will need. It gives you information on what appliance consumes the most power and its cost thereby allowing consumers to make a guided decision.

Solar Charger – This is very useful particularly for people who own quite a number of gadgets from laptops to mobile phones and gaming devices. It is solar-powered with an internal battery that can provide power up to 44 hours to a mobile phone and 18 hours to an iPod.

Eco Flap – This tool works by replacing the seals and flaps on the interior of a home letterbox attached to the main door. With the seal it provides, you can be sure to keep the cold air out of your home.

Energy-saving Socket –This is most ideal for people who do not want to unplug their devices while doing something else. It helps avoid the vampire power that normally occurs when an electronic device is put in standby mode and continues to eat up electricity. It works by acting as an intermediary between the wall socket and device.

Smart Power Strip – This is a socket proven effective in cutting energy use. It is strongly recommended for people who constantly use their computer along with other devices such as the printer, wifi-modem and speakers. To use this tool, you only need to plug your PC into the master socket and then all the other sockets are turned on at the time you power up your computer. When you shut it down, all the other devices are also switched off.

Automatic Radiator Bleeder – This tool works by releasing air that has built up in the radiator to ensure an efficient central heating and lower bills. Regular bleeding is required for radiators and failure to do so means your heater will use up more energy providing less heat moving onwards.

Be sure to visit other websites providing energy-saving tips such as Texas Electricity Providers to find out about the latest gadgets on the market.
