Tesla Expands Its Supercharging & Destination Charging Network in Australia

Critics arguing that Tesla does not have the infrastructure to support its growing fleet of electric cars in Australia were silenced today with the company’s announcement that it will implement a major expansion of its charging network. This comes on the back of the company reaching a milestone with its 300th Destination Charger installed at the Yarra Valley De Bortoli estate in Dixons Creek approximately 50 kilometres north-east of Melbourne near the towns of Yarra Glen and Healesville.

It’s no secret that the success of Tesla’s electric cars hinges on its electric vehicle charging infrastructure. In Australia, and worldwide, the company is making owning a Tesla as convenient and accessible as possible by offering two charging solutions:

1. Supercharging

Tesla Supercharger stations are strategically installed along well- travelled highways and near amenities like roadside diners, cafes, and shopping centres so owners can enjoy a quick meal and have their Model S and Model X charged by the time they’re done.

The Tesla Supercharger is designed for quick charging. It is more powerful than any existing charging technology, providing up to 120 kilowatts of power and 270 km of range in 30 minutes.

2. Destination Charging

The Tesla Destination Charging station is designed for car owners who wish to drive to key locations and want to enjoy a longer stop. Most are found at wineries, shopping centres, hotels, resorts and secure parking locations.

Destination Charging stations replicate the convenience of home charging by using the same Wall Connector infrastructure used at home. It charges at a rate of 40km every hour on 32amp or up to 81 km per hour with 3 phase. All charging is dependent on a site’s power output.

Other key milestones

The Tesla Supercharger network in Australia will nearly double by the end of 2017 with locations identified across Australia with the exception of Tasmania, North Territory and the ACT.

South Australia and Western Australia will have their first Supercharger locations with others planned in New South Wales, Victoria and Queensland so that car owners can enjoy popular tourist sites and holiday locations.

Once the Australian charging network is completed, Tesla owners will be able to drive from Adelaide’s city centre to Gympie in South West Queensland completely emissions-free.

Tesla leads the electric car industry with the fastest, most advanced charging technology in the world. The ongoing expansion of the charging networks will ensure that Tesla drivers are able to quickly and seamlessly charge their vehicles no matter what.
